Project description
The plant will span over 20 square kilometers of desert climate area, with more than four million PV modules. The 2 GW photovoltaic plant will become the largest single-site solar PV power plant in the world, deploying state of the art bifacial PV module technology mounted on a single axis tracker system.
The Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the project was signed in July 2020 between EWEC and EDF Renewables - Jinko Power Consortium, after achieving a world-record solar energy tariff for 1.35 cents per kilowatt-hour, which was further improved to 1.32 cents per kilowatt-hour upon financial closing. The transaction has been funded via seven international banks.
Upon completion, the plant will generate enough electricity for approximately 160,000 homes across the UAE.
Operational performance
The PV2 Project shall comprise the following facilities
PV2 Plant
(provided by EPC Contractor)
-
Power generation Plant based on solar photovoltaic technology.
-
33/400 kV Plant substation and associated equipment to connect the Plant with 400KV Electrical Special Facilities (“ESF”).
-
33 kV Underground cables, FOC and associated equipment between the PV2 Plant and the ADDC substation for the auxiliary supply of the ESF.
Electrical Special Facilities
(provided by EPC Contractor)
-
The Electrical Special Facilities (“ESF”) built by EPC Contractor and transferred by the Owner to the Abu Dhabi Transmission and Dispatch Company (“Transco”). The ESF “PV2 Switching Station” is built in compliance with Transco specification.
Power Transmission Facilities
(provided by Transco)
-
400 kV overhead lines (“OHL”) installed, operated, maintained and owned by Transco to meet transmission requirements of the plant power generation.
Project Structure
-
PV2 commercial and contractual structure is similar to those used in the IPP/IWPPs in Abu Dhabi and the northern Emirate.
-
PV2 Project Company will be owned as follows:
– 60% by a local holding company owned by TAQA and Masdar
– 40% by a foreign holding company, owned 50% by EDF Renewables and 50% by Jinko Power . -
100% of production will be sold to EWEC under a Power Purchase Agreement commencing from PCOD .
